For the last nine years, I’ve had this yearly project with some friends in which we organize an unofficial Oscar ballot. All of us donate prizes, and some of us take care of the design, development, hosting and maintenance of the website since the moment that the contenders are announced, all the way until the ceremony and after the ceremony to be sure that the winners receive their prizes.

I designed the experience for the last couple of years, but the latest version has been my favorite. I had the chance to add a lot of quality of life improvements, both for desktop and mobile views.

Since it’s a mostly-between-friends project, we had to define an MVP. The MVP for this ballot included:

  • List of nominees for all categories, considering different status: after announcement, during the ceremony, and after the ceremony.
  • Status for every pick: option that you selected, winner and/or error
  • A real-time leaderboard depending on correct answers.
  • A rules page just to be sure that the information is in the same place.
  • For recording the selections, we originally implemented Twitter login but since twitter changed course, we replaced it with Google Sign In.

The ballot for this year was a complete success, we had more than 200 participants and sent prizes for the top 7 in the leaderboard.

Here are some mockups that I made for this project:
